Vaughan, Ontario: The Hon. Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation and Member of Parliament for Vaughan, made the following statement on July 20, 2012:
“Our Government remains committed to this appeal as the laws surrounding euthanasia and assisted suicide exist to protect all Canadians, including those who are the most vulnerable,” said Minister Fantino.
"This is an emotional and divisive issue for many Canadians. It is our Government's view that the Criminal Code provisions that prohibit medical professionals, or anyone else, from providing assistance or counselling in a suicide, is constitutionally valid.
In April 2010, a large majority of Parliamentarians voted to not change these laws, showing a democratic will on this issue."After careful consideration of the legal merits of the June 15, 2012 ruling from the British Columbia Supreme Court, the Government of Canada will appeal the decision on assisted suicide to the British Columbia Court of Appeal, and will seek a stay of all aspects of the lower court decision.
